As one of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft‘s institutes, the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT is part of the German research landscape. It develops system solutions for manufacturing companies with all the necessary competencies under one roof. The institute currently employs around 450 people who are dedicated to applying their creativity to a wide range of projects.

The task of the Fraunhofer IPT is to transfer research findings into economically viable and unique innovations in the field of production. The focus is on the topics of process technology, production machines, mechatronics, production quality and metrology as well as technology management. Clients and partners come from all sectors of the manufacturing industries: aerospace and aviation, the automobile industry and its suppliers, particularly tool and die makers, as well as precision mechanics and optics industries and machine tool manufacturers.

The Fraunhofer IPT promotes and conducts applied research, implements research results in an industrial context, and provides relevant and effective consulting services for the direct benefit of industry, thereby making a significant contribution to the competitiveness of companies.

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering WZL of the RWTH Aachen University is today one of the largest and productive university institutes of its kind in Europe. Approximately 740 employees work in the four chairs for production engineering, manufacturing technology, machine tools and quality management and metrology. Research projects deal with fundamental principles as well as industrial requirements and applications, and work is also carried out to find practical solutions that streamline production.

Research is performed at the WZL in close dialogue with industry and in cooperation with different disciplines and is a balanced mixture of fundamental research and applied scientific developments.

As a university institute, the second most important task at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering is to train the next generation of highly qualified engineers in the field of production technology. The findings gleaned from research projects are fed directly into the teaching material, ensuring that courses are up-to-date and relevant.
